I think it's pretty icky that these skills - the base of all subsequent skills - take SO many pracs to get as they raise by 5-8% for lvl 1 chars. Level 1 chars have limited pracs to start and forcing them to use 75% to all of those initial pracs to get just the single base skill. And anyone who makes a 2nd class can pretty much forget either (one of) their primary or secondary class for much too long as it takes another 15-20 pracs to get the base skill in the 2nd class.

I know there is probably no way to fix this as hundreds of players have already wasted, er used, pracs on their existing base skills - but I think that the low % gains which result in too many pracs needed for base skills, is a turn off for new charactor creation.

What about if for newbies you could give em their primary base skill for free to help em start in the world? If warrior give combat 99%, if mage arcana 99% so that way newbies can get more than 1 skill to start their way in the world.Like grael points out its hard to spend tons of practs for base skills and sometimes u got combat high but kick sucks or slash is so low you cant hit much. If they wanna multiclass they have to get piety or etc in the normal way, spending lots of practs.

If i remember correctly on cythera (may have ben another mud too) we started out with base skill and a small percent of basic skill/spells. Such as: Mage had arcane and small amount of magic missile...
