I have been playing Woc since about late 2001 ( I think there may have been a pwipe some months before that date) and thought I would post some of my memories - It would be good to have contributions from those who go further back or some of the old cythera players.

I still have a few logs from shortly after I started. My memories include the old character stats whre 600 hp was considered to be a tank. The old man in the Ivory tower making it very easy to learn skills. Constant running battles between Silver Banner, Doom and the now defunct Golden Dawn. Not to mention Raw Power creating havoc and the Underground stabbing everything that moved. I remember players such as Brack, Random, Bonbon, Curtis, Random,Yrsh, Maharet, Enigma, Ovenmitt and the ever present Jabberwocky. Some of these players may still be with us under new guises and apologies to anyone else I should have listed here.

One of my 1st character builds was a mage with 2nd attack, charm, enchant, lich, soul strike and sanctuary - Sadly no longer possible but very effective in it's day.

I started Carnage in about 93, played a gnome mage. Ah those were the days. Crashes happened all the time. Felt like at least once an hour, but was maybe only 3-4 times a day. But it was also when you could charm person as many people as you wanted . I remember going with groups of Conan the Librarian, King's Advisors, captain of the guards, can't even remember the other guys to charm, but all in all there'd be about 15 attacks going at once (king's advisors had, maybe still have 8 attacks, plus all the others). My little wimpy gnome never had to do much. glorious! But it was dangerous living. If you failed a charm the little guy was toast. And if it crashed you had to repeat it all over again, sigh.

Charm, group mob, N, order mob sleep, back to next mob, repeat.
Finally with the whole group go on a rampage. Used to enjoy popping in to see Felix. Then when all done order group to kill each other one at a time, the LB the last one.

It was probably every hour or two, because when I played in 97 or so it happened often enough that players didn't want to invest time into doing the big quests because they'd just get near the end and BOOM... crash!

Fortunately I fixed all that crappy code.

i'm probably one of the oldest...back to '93 or so.

you can all thank a char named Nephilim ( i think, it's been a loooong time) for making me what i am. he was a necro and bestowed his fantastic zombie knowledge unto me. the rest is history!

besides Pazam, i was Jimmy in those days. i had 3 attacks and backstab. if i recall, he was also the 1st 'over 500hp' tank. Qe'lraith, the silver dragon, was my arch nemesis, which at 500hp, was not an easy fight.

i had my share of disputes w/ the imms...Panamon in particular. Badmood was also a pain sometimes. he liked to send his goon, Ometeotl, after me. it was my 1st experience w/ mobs that hunted you, or also manually controlled by Badmood.

the best part of the constant crashes was creating duplicate eq. get a nice spiritual sword, save, give it to your buddy, he saves, you don't, wait for a crash, log back in, and you both had a spiritual...sweeeeeeet!

one of my all time favorite chars (besides my originals Pazam and Jimmy) was a 3 attack, dualing, headbutting, lich touching reptile warrior/mage with somewhere around 800hp. now that was a fun char! i also had a cleric/mage w/ just about all the spells and a pile of mana, but the merge happened shortly after that, so i never got to exploit all that power.

i have been banned from WOC 2 or 3 times over the years, and made my final return when Blobbie took over as head honcho. someone found me in the Cythera field and told me about the news and that Blob was interested in me coming back.

during my bannings, i usually played Cythera, so i do have some history w/ some old timers there too.

i almost forgot one of the best things about old WOC...deaths door.

we (several lvl 60's) would recruit an unsuspecting newbie and convince them to 'help us out'. then, i would deaths door the poor sap, have him attack something god awful huge, and enjoy the show. depending on how big the mob and the group, the newb would be lying there, at - hp for several minutes, most likely crapping their pants the whole time.

when the opponent was defeated, i would heal the newb, who would come to utterly confused about what had just happened to him.

yes, deaths door was only limited by the tics it took to wear off, and mobs didn't switch targets back then....ahhhh the good ole days.

yeah but in those days you could also group with a low level and they could jump 10 levels off killing a cyclops or berserker from silver tower region...

sigh.

I think my fondest memory was discovering that the Alchemist had an unlimited supply of true sight potions in which you could buy 200 of 'em, place 'em in your bag of holding..buy 50 more and keep 'em on your person, steal your money back and then kill him....

I suppose I coulda just kilt him, but it was gratifying to take back what was mine in the first place...

i usually did cash runs. buy 20 potions in elkin, run to alvurron (which at the time wasn't that far from elkin) and sell them for 2x what you bought em for. set up a nice little macro and it was 2 keystrokes and a little time to riches.

i used to drag newbs around all day long. i think i was the 1st one to get to -10million xp TNL....i was the original kayenta xp hog! for you kiddies out there, when you reached max lvl, you didnt gain any xp, it just went negative forever, and was useless!

I think Hygrale and Mythos would disagree with you there. If I remember correctly, they both started with a gazillion xp when the Cythera-Carnage merge happened.

i don't recall how xp transfered to merge xp, but i am referring to xp gain beyond max xp in the OLD days....way before hygrale, mythos and even blobbie were playing WOC.

I know what you are talking about though. I didn't start playing until 2002, so we still had the negative xp thing going. It's funny, really none of my characters stayed at -xp for very long. I'd always be doing some quest on Blood or Damon, and get myself killed. Actually, I think one day I got really bored and decided how many deaths it would take to completely eradicate a lvl 60 character.

I think my favorite memories included special holidays and stuff where Blobbie or the other imps would hand out free levels. Before the Merge, Blood was like level 64 or 65.

And then there was his uber Worg on Cythera, whose name I can't remember anymore. Used to have to log Mryddin on and spawn the Moondog to eat it to keep him from sitting there killing helpless lil players for hours on end. Then there was the subsequent kick and... well, anyway. Those were the days.

Pazam, by the way, would frequently roleplay the necrophilia at the fountain on Cythera when there were players around he didn't know. Made for interesting times.

Post subject:  Re: WocMud History

Was thinking when I was typing a post for another thread about some stuff that I had the pleasure of experiencing on Cythera, since I don't remember much about WoC from back when I played it:

Acid Splash - Worthless spell unless you wanted to destroy equipment. So I used it one day on Abaddon's Hero, Wrath, and destroyed his hero-item. Acid Splash no longer damaged equipment after that :(

Fists of Fury - Fists of Fury at max caster level used to guarantee Annihilates when it was first implemented. Shortly after I reached 60/60 mage/warrior on my dwarf, Grith, the damage got reduced fairly significantly. Apparently it wasn't supposed to be used with 3rd attack on a 19 str character :(

One had to pick and choose where they attempted to fight players with access to Command in the first place so they didn't force you in to a deathtrap. Turns out Whirlwind worked just about as well...

When first implemented you could use the Death Knight's Void Walk (or whatever it was called) ability to travel to any player, including Immortals in rooms that weren't connected. Fortunately, for all anyone can say about Abby/BadMood he was a good coder (at least as far as I'm concerned) and the fix only took me about 30 seconds.

The Jungle of Mist area is actually reversed east-west from what it was supposed to be, which didn't bother anyone except me because they didn't know better. I continually got lost in there cause I could see the graph-paper map that it started with in my head when I went in to it :(

At one point in Cythera's 2nd Age it was popular enough that any given weeknight there would be upwards of 30 people connected... pretty hot for a MUD, especially in the late 90s.

Abaddon hated all things neutral. Any really good equipment had to be good or evil only! Frankly it was a pain in the ass to stay neutral anyway, spent more time fixing Shrek's alignment than I did actually getting XP.

Wrath was a closet-fan of Rage Against the Machine:P

Nope, I never liked RATM :)

Had a lot of fun on both WOC and Cythera through the years. A recent conversation with an old friend that also played both games led me to the forums and this post.

Props to Blobbie, I wish you had happened to WOC when the mud was a crash prone mess at UFL.

Hit me up at stevesouter70 via google mail if you care to reminisce. I lost touch with Pazam and wanted to hear his insights on latter day VH :)

i hear DLR is back in the studio w/ VH. maybe the 8th time is the charm? even if he does stick it out this time, they have ed's kid on bass, so it seems we'll never see the old group back together.
